Sebastian caught the book as it slipped from Eurydice’s lap but had to read the title of the selected chapter twice.

Coitus.

Then he read the first paragraph to verify that the subject was as expected.

He closed the book and smiled. She actually had brought the medical treatise and was consulting it with regards to their wedding night ahead. Sebastian chuckled and tucked the book into the bundle with the others. He tucked his cloak around his betrothed and drew her against his side, watching her sleep. She had been awake early enough to witness the duke’s arrival. She slept so deeply now that he wondered whether she had slept at all the night before.

What did she know of intimacies between man and wife? Likely very little. Her mother had died when she was a small child and Sebastian could not imagine Lady Octavia enlightening her grand-daughters. Did Eurydice talk about private matters with her sister, the duchess? Possibly, but if that were the case, whatever she had learned had been insufficient to satisfy her curiosity.

Hence the book.

He would have to take great care this night to ensure that she had her pleasure. She learned quickly, that was for certain, for already she showed an alacrity with kissing that tempted him to forget her innocence. He sighed, knowing that restraint was not one of his better traits.

But there had been a chance to end their arrangement, and Eurydice had not taken it. Not only had she ensured their escape, but she had accepted the change of terms. The notion that she truly did wish to wed him gave Sebastian a warm glow about his heart. Perhaps she too felt something dawning between them. Could it be that people found a love match like that of his parents in other ways? He knew his father had been smitten at first glance, and perhaps, if he met Eurydice now for the first time, Sebastian’s reaction might be the same. It was not all bad that they had known each other for years, for that fostered a trust between them that could not be quickly gained. He looked down at her and touched one of those errant curls, knowing that he would miss her pert commentary when she departed for his country house.

In fact, he came to suspect that London might have less appeal without the prospect of Eurydice’s company. He thought about introducing her to the pleasures of the city and knew he would spoil her dreadfully at the dressmakers and other shops. He knew she had been to the theatre, but he would take her to all manner of exhibitions and shows. He would teach her to drive his carriage, just to see her eyes light with triumph, and he would indulge her in bookstores, just to make her smile. He fully expected that she would not allow him to evade his responsibilities and he did not mind that in the least.

Would their son favor her or him? He hoped the boy was fair with Eurydice’s eyes.
